my Great great grandfather


Finn & great great grandfather John Blackwood. 20555. Lance Corporal. 8th Battalion. Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Died Of Wounds 29th April 1916 after being gassed The second battle of Ypres on April 22nd 1915 initiated for the first time in history the use of weapons of mass destruction. The use of chlorine gas by the Germans killed thousands of allied soldiers. He was 18 years old, and left behind a pregnant wife. He was one of three Blackwood brothers who went to WW1 with two of them John and James both not returning home. He is buried near Ypres (Ypres is a Belgian municipality in the province of West Flanders)
